Paltuding trekking camp

At Pos Paltuding (1,850), the PHPA post at the start of the walk to the crater lake, are three facilities available where you can spent the night. A few years ago you could just throw your sleeping back on the floor, now there are actually some beds available too. Keep in mind that it gets extremely cold at this altitude! In the 'warungs' you find at the parking lot, you can buy some snacks like mie, fried rice (nasi goreng) and fried bananas (pisang goreng). Otherwise, bring your own food.

Facilities to spent the night at Paltuding

At Paltuding you can spent the night in one of the three houses available. There is one house without beds, here you can just throw your sleeping bag on the floor. You rent the complete house. In the other two you can rent a room with a bed.
All facilities do not have a bathroom or toilet indoors. And, electricity is only available from five o'clock in the evening till five o'clock in the morning.

To lake Ijen (2,368 m): inclination 17%

Everybody that doesn't spent the night at Paltuding will arrive early in the morning, most of them around five o'clock. Everybody comes that early because of several reasons. The first is that it is fresh in the morning what results in beautiful pictures. Besides, the smoke from Mt Ijen thickens from around 14.00 o'clock onwards. And in the raining season clouds come in early.
It is just a three kilometres climb from the parking lot at the PHPA post to the lake, but is steep. In just three kilometres you climb 518 metres, that is almost 175 metres per kilometre. That is an average inclination of 17%! The first two kilometres are most heavy.
